Frequently Asked Questions

What is the New Horizons Band all about?

This is an entry level (beginner) band-based program that allows mature adults to learn to play a band instrument in a group setting for the first time in their lives or to re-connect with an instrument they played years ago. There is NO experience required or audition for Level I.  Part of the program is to get you set up with everything you will need and want to know to succeed.

Player who have been playing again for at least a year will find Level II a place to continue dusting off those skills and freally get back in the game. There is no audition for Level II. You will decide with with your director if it is the right fit for you.

Who is the New Horizons Band for?

This band is geared for adults from 50(+/-) – 90+ years of age (but no one will be checking ID).  This program will give you an opportunity to have fun making music, make new friends and keep your mind and body active.

Do you really mean “no experience” for Level I?

Yes! This program was created to give people an opportunity to learn something new in a group setting. So, all you need to do is try it.

What if I haven’t played in years, but have experience – can I still join?

Yes. This will provide you with an excellent opportunity to reconnect with your instrument and/or try out a new one.

I have experience – will I be bored?

No.  Both levels will provide you with a chance to meet new people and to review technique.  There will also be leadership opportunities and possible small ensemble work for people with skill and experience who want to get in more playing.

Do I need an instrument?

Yes.  You will need an instrument in good playing order.

If you don’t have an instrument the experienced sales staff at Long & McQuade can help you find the instrument that is right for you to either purchase or rent.  Long & McQuade has an inexpensive rental program to get you started - be sure to mention that you are part of the New Horizons Band for your school rate rental.

If you own an instrument but are not sure if it is in good condition, Long & McQuade has trained technicians for all instruments who can expertly clean and/or repair your instrument.

What instruments can I choose to play in this band?

The New Horizons Band is a concert band and therefore offers you the opportunity to play a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument.  They are: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba, bells, xylophone, drums and many other percussion instruments.

What if I don’t know what instrument to play?
